Costa Rica Travel: Off the Beaten Path in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a hotspot for any traveler looking to enjoy nature and sun. Here you will find some of the richest wildlife, spectacular landscapes, and beautiful beaches. Seems too perfect doesn’t it? Well the downside is exactly that; Costa Rica is too perfect. With millions of visitors each year and such a small country, it rapidly gets packed! Read this guide for some tips to off the beaten path attractions for an amazing Costa Rica travel adventure, where tourists, although never completely absent, won’t be crowding you.

A haven for birdwatchers and hikers, San Gerardo de Dota, a small town secluded up against the Talamanca Mountain Range, is a perfect destination for those who wish to enjoy nature at its best, and in all tranquility. This quaint town has not been hit by tourism quite as much as others, and offers access to the beautiful Los Quetzales National Park. Stay in the village in one of the gorgeous villas or mountain lodges available as accommodations, and enjoy the breathtaking views of green rolling hills and fruit orchards surrounding you. Over 200 bird species inhabit this land, making it a great spot to observe hummingbirds and woodpeckers among others. You can also organize a little trout fishing trip, a favorite activity among locals.

Located in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, near the San Carlos River which forms the border with Nicaragua, Boca Tapada is a remote and beautiful area covered with exotic plantations of pineapple and sugar canes, and home to a very rich and diverse wildlife. It is one of the few remaining nesting sites of the Great Green Macaw which you can observe in the brand new Maquenque Eco Preserve reservation.

One of the most remote and windswept beach destinations in Costa Rica, Bahia Salinas offers an amazing setting with scenic, untouched beaches, for a rural experience of Costa Rica. It’s also a great place for surfing and kiteboarding with constant wind funneling through the area. All types of adventure activities are available in the region, from mountain biking to hiking, kayaking and fishing.
